2 Tips For Getting The Best Solar Lights
Dec 18th
Why are solar lights so popular today? There are many people who use them, and more and more people are becoming interested in them all the time. Obviously they are great for saving money on energy, as well as helping the environment.
However, there are many of them sold, so it can be hard to choose the best one. You can get solar driveway lights, garden lights, swimming pool lights, etc. Here are two tips for finding the best lighting for you:
#1) Think about location
To find the best one, first consider where it is going to be used. The bigger the area, the more powerful the lighting has to be. There are a few different types of solar lights available. The more popular ones are the accent, path and task models.
The one you pick will vary based on where you are putting it. For instance, the accent lights are the weakest, and are used to light up tiny areas. The path lights are the strongest, and are generally used for driveways and other large locations. Just make sure you make your decision accordingly.
#2) Read reviews
In addition to the kinds of lighting, there will obviously be differences from one company to the next in terms of quality. Some of them hold their charge much longer than others, even if the lighting is technically the same kind. Therefore, be sure you take time and read reviews of whichever one you are considering.
It might be worth paying a bit more, and this is particularly true if you live in a location with a lot of trees. This will make it more difficult for the solar panel to capture the UV rays, and therefore you will have to get a stronger light.
Conclusion-solar lights are a great option, but only when you buy the right kind for you. Use these two tips, and you will find it shortly.
Adding Solar Lights To The Garden
Feb 10th
Solar lights are very easy to install in your garden. All you have to do is choose the site that you want the device to be, turn it on and stick in the ground. Best of all, they do not require electricity and so no wiring is involved.
Some are equipped with a small solar panel on top, others have a removable panel that can be placed in a tucked away area.
During the day, the solar panel, linked to an electronic circuit, recharges the batteries. When night falls a small photoelectric cell in the light detects changes in brightness and turns on the light. At sunrise, the lights dim and the charge cycle begins again.
Assuming that the batteries are fully charged, good solar garden lighting provides illumination for the entire night without problems. NiCad (nickel-cadmium) or NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) batteries are often used in solar lighting applications. These will last 2 or 3 years and are easily replaceable should their efficiency begin to diminish.
Modern solar garden lights use LED (Light Emitting Diode) technology. Unlike normal light bulbs, LED energy is very low, thus providing more illumination time. Furthermore, LEDs are very reliable and can last a very long time when compared to conventional lighting.
With regards maintenance, the only thing needed is to clean the solar panels from time to time. Regularly removing the accumulation of dust and dirt with a soft brush ensures optimal performance.
Do not expect solar garden lighting to provide extremely bright light though. Their main objective is to create a pleasant atmosphere at night. Very nice accent lighting can be achieved when the lights are located in areas to illuminate garden features such as plants and ornaments.
Garden solar lights can be found in a large number of designs and can be used for many purposes. Beyond the common, simple mounted types they can be found in applications such as floating solar lights for swimming pools or ponds, solar deck lights and solar path lighting.
Solar garden lights are not limited to the garden however, and can be found in use all around the home which is a testament to their versatility.
Using Solar Lights Correctly
Jan 4th
By now, most people have read all about the benefits of installing solar lights on their property. There’s no messy wires to run, no reason to have to buy an expensive transformer, you won’t have to hire an electrician to come in to run high voltage wires to where you need to place the transformer, and you won’t have to play with math to figure out how many fixtures you can place on each wire or how far you can run a wire before the lights start to dim. While there are quite a few advantages to using solar garden lights, there’s also a few disadvantages. If you want to get the most out of your lights, make sure that you use them correctly.
One major disadvantage of solar garden light is that even though there have been huge advances in LED, solar panel, and battery technology, they still don’t get as bright as traditional lights. So, while you probably shouldn’t use solar powered fixtures for floodlighting or reading lights, they make excellent accent lights, where soft, dimmer light is called for.
Before you install a large amount of these lights though, make sure that the areas you are thinking about installing them in get direct sunlight for at least a large portion of the day. If they don’t you could be left with lights that don’t charge at all! To make sure that you don’t have this happen to you, buy just a few fixtures at first and if the lights are up to your standards after you’ve tested them in the locations you plan on using them for a few days, install the rest.
Solar garden lights are a very valuable tool in any buddy landscaper’s arsenal, but make sure that you use them right. These lights work as accent lights in areas that get lots of direct light. If you use them in other roles, you may be a little bit disappointed in their performance.
