How to Choose Patio Lights

Installing patio lights has a number of benefits. Aside from allowing you to be able to lounge outside at night, having bright lights outdoors will also beautify your home in the evening while helping to keep robbers at bay. But what kind of patio lights will be the best to use? If you are at a loss as to what kind of lighting to purchase for your outdoor area, here are a few ideas that you can use to help decide:

•    Consider the size of your patio. If you have a large area, you will need to put in several patio lights in order to light up the whole area.

•    Plot where you want to put the lights before you buy. Usually lighting is placed in the four corners as well as in the center so that the light will be distributed evenly. Preparing ahead of time will also determine what wattage you have to purchase. If you plan to install the lights in only a few places it will be best to purchase patio lights that have high wattages so that it can light up the whole area–even if there are only few lights. However, if you plan to put up the lights in various areas you can opt for the low wattage lights.

•    If you are conscious about your monthly bills, you can choose solar powered patio lights. These lights do not consume electricity from the electrical grid. Instead it gets its energy by using sunlight. All you need to do is to expose the solar panels to the sunlight during the day so that when night comes they will have enough energy to keep the light on until morning. These lights also come in different wattages, so you’ll want to calculate how much light you need to know how many to purchase.

•    Make sure to focus on choosing good-quality patio lights. Since they will be placed outdoors they will be exposed to extreme weather on a regular basis. Although high-end patio lighting might be more expensive in the short term, it will pay for itself with increased longevity and efficiency.

Different Variations Of Outdoor Lighting

There are many different kinds of lighting available for your outdoor living space. You could choose a post light, pathway lighting or even flood lights, but for many people the lighting of choice is the outdoor copper sconce. The outdoor sconce is a light that is held up entirely by the wall, meaning there is no base touching the ground as in other forms of lighting. Traditionally the light is directed upwards, but there are also modern variations which direct the light downwards to help reduce unnecessary light pollution.

Pathway lighting is another popular form of lighting. Pathway lights are usually close to the ground and are help up by posts pushed into the ground on either side of a path. This casts a pleasant, warm glow over the path, and is often used on path leading to the front door of a house. There are two main variations of the pathway light that need to be considered, the solar light, and the wired light. Of course both variations have their pros and cons, and it largely depends which appeals to you the most. The solar light has a much easier installation, usually just pushing the post into the ground, and are completely independent of your electricity. Unfortunately, solar lights tend to be dimmer, and require direct sunlight during the day for optimum efficiency. Wired installations usually require a trench to be dug to bury the electric wire running to each light, and they will have a small effect on your electric bill. On the flip side they tend to be brighter, and will work no matter how cloudy it was during the day.

As you can see we just touched base on two forms of lighting, but there are many different kinds of lighting available. While many people love the glow of pathway lighting, other just can’t resist the focal point, and the classic good looks of the outdoor sconce.
