Shoes tend to find their way to the floor of one’s closet. Most people would like to get all of their shoes organized, but they don’t know where to start. The first step you will want to take is to declutter. You probably have shoes from seasons past that you will not be wearing again any time soon. By getting rid of the shoes that you won’t be wearing, you will know how many shoes you have to work with and get the right sized organizer for you.

There are several options for shoe organizers. The one I would not recommend is shoe boxes. Some shoe boxes come in real nice colors and are decorative. Others are clear, so that you can see your shoes. So why do I not recommend them? Simply because they are a hassle to deal with. In a few weeks, you will find that instead of having a pile of shoes, classified flats and Iverson shoes, on your closet floor, you will have the pile of shoes and disheveled boxes on your closet floor. You want to simplify your organization solution.

Shelves and cubbies that you place on your closet floor is a great solution. One thing you need to remember when you are organizing anything is that you want to go with the behavior patterns you have already set, as opposed to trying to form a bunch of new patterns of behavior. If you are in the habit of kicking your shoes off onto your closet floor, then a shoe rack will be what you naturally will kick your shoes onto. This will keep them organized and easy to find.

A solution that is good, but maybe not ideal, is an over the door rack or pocket shoe organizer. This is good, because it creates an out of the way spot for your shoes. They are organized and kept in pairs. What usually happens with these is this, your favorite shoes will be kicked off onto the floor, while the ones you wear less frequently will go on the shoe rack. That is fine, as long as you understand that is what is happening. There is nothing wrong with some shoes on the floor. You just need to find a solution that works for you.
