Small Kitchen Basics – Making The Most of Space
When you are designing a small kitchen, you need to have a very different frame of mind than you would need if you were designing a kitchen that had more area. You need to take the limited space of the small kitchen into account whenever you make any decision regarding layout, choice of appliances, furniture, and otherwise. Otherwise, you may find yourself with a beautiful kitchen that contains the best of everything, bu doesn’t actually have any room in which to store any food. The efficient use of all available space is absolutely critical.
Now, there are a lot of ways to make the most efficient use of a small kitchen. One method of doing so that you may not have considered is the use of multitasking appliances. Traditionally, the oven has served to do three jobs – bake, broil, and provide stovetop burners. Modern ranges are not nearly so limited. A modern kitchen stove can do not only all of these jobs, but also function as a steamer and, if you can find a really nice model, even include a stovetop grill. Who says you need lots of space and a patio to make grilled food?
While it’s great to have appliances that can perform lots of jobs, one part of the kitchen that some people overlook is the amount of storage space they have to work with. In addition to simple shelves and cabinets, there are several additional options that you may not have taken into account. Hanging baskets, shelves or cabinets embedded in the wall, and pull-out pantries create additional options for making the most efficient use of your space and maximizing the amount of storage space you have.
The efficient use of space has to be at the top of your list of priorities when you are designing a small kitchen if you truly want the kitchen to be as functional as it could be. There are other considerations, but space conservation overshadows them all. After all, when you are cooking, it is certainly not going to do for you to have to run to the spare bedroom every time you need to get an ingredient for whatever you are making. This potentially disastrous consequence can be easily avoided with a little forethought.
