Preventing Water Damage in The Laundry
Most washer dryer machines are located in the kitchen or laundry and can create heat and moist air. A result, if not maintained properly, is that these appliances can lead to an accumulation of water and mold formation.
There is normally a hot and cold water connection to the washing machine. They need to be checked frequently. Start with an inspection of the joints and fix any leaks you come across. It is important to check both ends of the supply line. Any filters should be removed and cleaned or replaced.
Any blocked filters will slow down the flow of water to the appliance and could cause a problem within the machine itself. This is a particular problem in areas with hard water. Any blockages or problems with the shut off valve need to be detected by looking for drips into the washing machine whilst it is switched off.
If, in the unfortunate event that you do find a leak, then it is vital to replace the valve. It is usually found that most leaks arise from the hose which is quite common. Compression on the hose at the back of the machine can cause kinking and eventually lead to the hose bursting. It prevents compression on the hose which could cause kinking and bursting.
Old hoses are a common cause of leakage and so should be changed regularly. A good choice is to consider installing steel braided hoses. The drying machine is connected to the outside world via a ventilation hose which needs to be checked carefully and regularly. The dryer ventilation hose should be connected to the outdoors through a wall or window opening.
Have a look for lint behind and under the drying machine and ensure the ventilation pipe is not blocked. Short exhausts are more efficient for the dryer, so make it as short as possible.
The utility sink is occasionally a source for potential water related damage.
Have a regular look for leaks under the sink. Any drips coming from the traps are a sign of potential problems and should be addressed immediately. A slow draining sink could indicate a possible blockage in the drainage system.
Faucets that are constantly dripping need to be looked at and repaired promptly. Any sink seals that are cracked or loose can be replaced. On inspecting the plumbing pipes, if you notice any staining or signs of damp then this is a sign of leakage and should be remedied. Addressing these measures will help in the long run to reduce damage by water.
