Winter is approaching, and like most people, you probably want to bust out some decorations to make your home look and feel a little more jolly for the upcoming winter holidays. But you don’t need a life-size Santa that howls at casual observers or a room covered in fake poinsettias to show off your holiday spirit.

Do bear in mind that, unless you live in Siberia, Antarctica, or Alaska, winter ornaments will be temporary, so we propose not having your home undergo any permanent changes. Anyway, in order to make your home look most charming during the ic y months of winter, you must look at what the season is: snowy, dark, and cold. People want to be warm in the winter, so the perfect compliment to the frigid temperatures and bleak frostiness would be a warm color palette for your home.

Reds, browns, oranges and golds are all great warm shades. They also happen to be the colors of several Christmas decorations. Coincidence? Probably not. Get some pillows and rugs that are red or orange; if you happen to have a red couch, get some tan pillows, or maybe even put some pinecones in certain spots in the room.

One of the things you might want to change is the brightness of the lights. Things will just get way too visually loud if you have a blinding light shining in your face, so why not get some bulbs with a softer light content? Or, rather than tinker with the lights, invest in some candles, which are in abundance around the holidays. Get some candles with relaxing scents that just make people feel all warm and fuzzy, such as gingerbread or peppermint. Yankee Candles, while expensive, have an exquisite and unbeatable scent, and one of those large candles will likely last you more than one Christmas. And if you want people to feel hot and bothered, light them on fire – it doesn’t get much warmer than that.

Removable wall stickers can come in mighty handy this time of year. Not only are they inexpensive, but they’re temporary, reusable, and pretty darn creative! Embellish a door frame with some images of holly berries, or have some sort of Christmas-y slogan stuck across your living room wall like “Peace on Earth”. If you look in some places online, you can probably even get a full-wall mural decal to hang up for the winter and take down in the spring…a winter wallpaper of sorts, maybe of a manger scene or a poinsettia design.

If you can’t find what you like in terms of a wall decal, just shop around for someone who will make a custom decal for you. In the latter case, you might need someone to devise the image for you to give to the decal designer…this is not the kind of design a professional artist would tackle, so look for a trainee designer or an art student. Both these kinds of artists are typically great at what they do and will take all the graphic design jobs their superiors snub.

You don’t automatically have to deck the halls or buy some of the tacky garland available in stores. Warmth is expressed through color and behavior, not through the plastic Christmas cactus you bought at Wal-Mart. Keep that in mind when deciding how to spruce up your home this season.
