Carbon Filters – Home Air Quality Depends on Them
Carbon filters are not talked about much these days, but they are an interesting item that should be understood and used. Carbon used in these filters is basically charcoal, and it has some of the most amazing properties. For instance, did you know that carbon is given to people who swallow poisons of certain types and the carbon will actually attract these toxins, bind them, and help reduce the effects of the poison.
A carbon filter does the same thing. Carbon has these very small craters on the surfaces, basically micro size holes that many organic types of compounds get stuck in. Carbon attracts these organics and locks them up in the filter, effectively removing them from the environment. You may not be aware that carbon filters also remove smells. Organic compounds usually have odor. These filters will reduce the odor in your house, or remove it entirely. Coolant filtration is about the only place where carbon has not proven very useful.
When you are looking at house filtration, be sure to consider whether the home air purifier you are thinking of buying uses any carbon in the filter. You will find that the carbon portion is usually called a pre-filter, and will be on the outside of the primary filter. These pre-filters can be purchased separately and don’t cost as much as the primary filter. If your air cleaner is designed in this fashion, you will likely replace the carbon filter every 3 months or so , depending on how much use it has seen.
Finally, carbon filters will actually make the air in your home more pure. As was stated before, carbon will remove or “bind” many organic compounds such as carpet glues, plastic off gassing, and other household contaminants that you should not breathe. By removing these, your air will be less polluted and you should enjoy a healthier life. Home air filters are a key ingredient in a healthy house.
