There is an interesting dichotomy in the world of safe buying between what people are trying to protect and what they are willing to do to protect it.  Most people recognize the benefit of having a safe to protect their valuables, but they are often unwilling to make any sort of additional push for added protection.  A fireproof safe is a perfect example.

The very basic safes do not come with much intrinsic fireproofing.  They are simply a box with a locking mechanism on it.  If they have some degree of quality, they may even make it rather difficult for an intruder to crack or break into the safe.  The fact remains is that if you want fire protection on your safe, it must be added to the purchase.

A fireproof safe is never actually fireproof, but rather provides a level of fire protection for a duration of time.  Safes are rated based on how long they can last under direct heat for a specified period of time.  The longer it lasts, the better your chances of making it through a fire.

The interesting thing about adding this feature is that most people balk at the additional cost.  They will have no problem buying additional jewelry for thousands of dollars or they will even spend thousands on accessories for their firearms.  To add the fireproofing protection to the safe is only a matter of a couple of hundred dollars more.

The cost of fireproofing can be considered pre-paid insurance on the contents you are trying to protect.  You only have to pay once for the fireproofing.  And when it comes down to actually protecting your possessions from loss, the fireproofing may actually turn out to be more valuable than the theft protection.  There are hundreds of thousands of fires in the home each year, make sure that your valuables are protected in a fireproof safe.
